Basic movement mechanics in Fortnite and how to improve them

Basic Movement Mechanics

Walking, running, sliding, jumping, mantling

Things to practice:

  • Precise jumping - jumping and landing on something specific/small
  • Only Up Fortnite (code: 4366-9611-6988)
  • DeathRuns (search for “DeathRuns” inside Fortnite)
  • Mantling up varying builds and directions
  • Mantling is important for situations where you have no more build materials, or modes of gameplay where you are not able to build (ex. Zero-Build). You can generally mantle on different things to get to the area of height you are intending to climb. Mantling can save you from using build materials as well, and can be a good way to scale your opponent’s builds when chasing.
  • As you approach something that you can mantle up - such as a wall, some types of fence (typically the taller ones that are one build component tall), or single-stage build elements - press the jump button twice. Alternatively, you can enable an option in settings to allow you to hold down the button instead. Both methods work effectively; it is just a matter of personal preference.
  • Playing in Zero Build (ZB) is a good way to force yourself to practice mantling to get in and out of buildings, move between floors, scale walls, etc. Then transition it into climbing builds in building game modes.
  • Only Up Fortnite (code: 4366-9611-6988) is also a good place to practice mantling.
  • Warming up
  • It's definitely best to warm up all of your mechanics before ever loading into a competitive game or tournament. Play a few rounds in pubs or creative maps to make sure you are ready to go.
  • But there’s also a good opportunity to practice this in the pre-game lobby while everyone is standing around. Make it a habit of practicing normal movement before loading the bus while in the pre-game lobby for those last second warmups and to get focused.
